Released in Japan on February 26, 2009, Yakuza 3 follows Kazuma Kiryu as he attempts to leave his yakuza past behind and raise orphaned children at Morning Glory Orphanage in Okinawa, only to be pulled back into conflict threatening both the orphanage and national security. The game earned the Japan Game Awards 2008 Future Division award, visible on this box, before it had even released. Sony celebrated the Japanese launch with a limited 10,000-unit Ceramic White PS3 bundle called the Rising Dragon Pack (昇り龍パック).
The Japanese PS3 release is substantially more complete than the Western version that arrived in 2010. When Sega localized the game for North America and Europe, citing time constraints and doubts about cultural resonance, they removed 21 substories, four minigames including mahjong, shogi, and the aroma massage parlor, and the entire hostess club management system. The massage parlor substory cut is particularly notable as it featured a trans character voiced by a real trans TV personality. Estimates placed the total cut content at roughly 13% of the first six chapters. The Western PS3 release was quietly made more difficult as a result, since the cut substories provided experience points and currency used for upgrades. This Japanese copy contains everything that was removed. The PS4 remaster eventually restored the content for Western players in 2019, but the original PS3 Western release remains the cut version.
