Super Mario 64 launched alongside the Nintendo 64 on June 23, 1996, and changed what video games could be. Developed by Nintendo EAD under Shigeru Miyamoto, it was the first fully realized 3D platformer on a home console and remained the definitive template for the genre for years after. This is the original Japanese release, NUS-NSMJ-JPN, not the later Shindou reprint.
The Japanese version is a meaningfully different game from the North American release. Over 200 code changes were made between the two versions. The Japanese original has no voice acting anywhere in the game — no narrated letter from Peach, no “It’s-a-me, Mario” on the title screen, no “Okie Dokie” on file select. The Jolly Roger Bay course uses a bubble painting in a blue frame rather than the Western sunken ship redesign. The Bowser fight completion animation shows a Power Star above Mario rather than a key. Certain level geometry and star collection methods differ between versions as well. For speedrunners, the original Japanese cartridge is the version of choice for multiple categories, as the absence of Peach’s voiced narration shortens the game’s total runtime versus the North American release.
