Released on June 14, 1994 in Japan, the Super Game Boy (スーパーゲームボーイ) is a Super Famicom cartridge peripheral that lets you play original Game Boy games on a television through your Super Famicom. Inside the cartridge is a complete Game Boy CPU — the Super Famicom simply handles video output, controller input, and the additional colorization features. Games with Super Game Boy support unlock custom color palettes, unique screen borders, and in some titles, enhanced sound effects using the Super Famicom’s audio hardware.
One key technical note for collectors: the original Super Game Boy runs at approximately 2.4% faster than a standard Game Boy, the result of deriving its clock from the Super Famicom hardware rather than a dedicated crystal. This causes a subtle audio pitch shift and a slight frame stutter in scrolling games. Nintendo addressed this in Japan with the 1998 follow-up Super Game Boy 2 (SHVC-042), which used a corrected clock crystal, added a link cable port for multiplayer, and was never released outside Japan. The SHVC-027 you see here is the original 1994 model.
