Released in Japan on July 21, 2000, Mario Tennis 64 is developed by Camelot Software Planning and holds a notable place in Mario history as the debut game of Waluigi, as well as the return of Princess Daisy and Birdo to the franchise. The core tennis gameplay is deep enough to reward serious play while remaining accessible from the first serve, with 16 playable characters, multiple court types, and a full tournament mode.
The Japan title “Mario Tennis 64” differs from the Western release, which shipped simply as “Mario Tennis.” Beyond the name, the Japanese version connects with the Japan-released companion GBC game Mario Tennis GB via the N64 Transfer Pak (known in Japan as the 64GBパック). Through this link, four human characters from the GBC game (Alex, Harry, Nina, and Kate) can be transferred to the N64 version as fully playable 3D characters, with XP earned in the N64 game feeding back into the GBC version for further leveling. The first time the Transfer Pak link is made, Yoshi, Wario, Waluigi, and Bowser are unlocked in the GBC version along with their mini-games. Completing those mini-games and reconnecting unlocks six additional courts in the N64 version including Bowser Court, Wario Court, and Waluigi Court. This entire cross-game progression system was removed from all Virtual Console re-releases.
