Final Fantasy VIII is Square's ambitious 1999 follow-up to Final Fantasy VII, and one of the most visually and narratively distinctive entries in the series. Its Junction magic system replaced traditional leveling with a deep customization mechanic built around drawing spells from enemies, and its story — centered on a group of teenage mercenaries and a romance between Squall and Rinoa — pushed cinematic storytelling further than any Japanese RPG had at the time. The opening FMV sequence remains one of the most impressive technical achievements of the PS1 era.
