Released in Japan on July 13, 2000, Duel Monsters III was the third entry in Konami’s GBC card battle series and the first to be GBC-exclusive (ゲームボーイカラー専用). It introduced the Expert Rules to the series, meaning Level 5 and above monsters now require tributes to summon, bringing the gameplay closer to the actual OCG.
The headline new feature is the Construction System, where you combine upper and lower card parts won from duels to create custom monsters — producing 9,800 possible unique cards on top of the 800 standard ones in the game.
Despite the subtitle referencing the three Egyptian God cards, the Gods are not actually playable. They appear only on a stone tablet in the ending. The Japanese version has a major connectivity advantage over the Western release: Link Cable trading is compatible with Duel Monsters I and II, allowing card exchanges across all three games. Those prior entries never left Japan, so that cross-game trading feature is entirely Japan-exclusive by default. When this game finally reached the West in 2002 as “Dark Duel Stories,” the title was changed entirely and the release was bundled with promotional physical cards to help launch the TCG in Western markets — a version of the game built around a very different commercial context.
