The first Zelda title for a handheld console, Link’s Awakening originally released in Japan in June 1993 and became an immediate hit, topping the Famitsu sales chart that same month. The DX version arrived in December 1998 as a Game Boy Color enhanced re-release, adding full color graphics, an exclusive Color Dungeon, and a Camera Shop side quest with 12 printable photographs via the Game Boy Printer. The cartridge runs on both original Game Boy and GBC hardware, as noted on the label itself (ゲームボーイ&カラー共通).
The Japanese version preserves content that was altered for Western markets. The mermaid’s missing item is her bikini top in the Japanese script, changed to a necklace for the North American release. The hippo in Animal Village retains her original uncensored portrayal as an artist’s model. These changes carried over into all Western DX releases but were left intact in the Japanese DX.
