Fatal Fury is where the South Town story begins. SNK's 1991 Super Famicom fighter introduces Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard, and Joe Higashi pursuing Geese Howard through the criminal underworld of South Town — characters and lore that would run through Fatal Fury, King of Fighters, and Garou: Mark of the Wolves for decades. The two-lane fighting system, allowing characters to dodge between foreground and background planes, gave the series a different rhythm from Street Fighter.
